Small Decisions. Big Consequences.

Published September 2026

When people describe life-changing moments, they often picture something dramatic.

Landing the dream job.

Winning the lottery.

Moving to a new home.

Starting a business.

Looking back over my own life, I've realised something rather different.

The biggest changes rarely began with dramatic moments.

They began with small decisions that didn't seem particularly important at the time.

Tiny Choices Have a Habit of Growing

Most decisions don't announce their importance.

They're made on ordinary Tuesdays.

They're often so small that nobody else notices them.

Read one book.

Go to one meeting.

Have one conversation.

Keep going when stopping would have been easier.

Each one feels insignificant.

Until years later.

The Invisible Turning Points

When Emma and I decided to build a residual income, we had no idea it would eventually help us move to Cumbria.

When I accepted voluntary redundancy from BT, I couldn't see the path that lay ahead.

When I started Whitstable Computer Repair, I wasn't trying to write the next chapter of my life.

I was simply making the best decision I could with the information I had at the time.

Only later did those decisions reveal their true significance.

We Overestimate Big Moments

It's easy to believe that success arrives in giant leaps.

In reality, it usually arrives quietly.

One decision.

Then another.

Then another.

Eventually, someone looking from the outside calls you lucky.

What they didn't see were the hundreds of small decisions that quietly led there.

A Question Worth Asking

Whenever I'm faced with a decision now, I try to think differently.

Instead of asking,

"What difference will this make today?"

I ask,

"What direction will this point me in?"

Because direction, given enough time, is usually far more important than speed.

The Real Lesson

Life rarely changes because of one spectacular decision.

It changes because we keep making small decisions that move us, almost imperceptibly, towards a different future.

Never underestimate today's seemingly ordinary choice.

It may become the decision that changes everything.
